Funeral for The Stud

The artist collective that owns The Stud, a longtime gay bar that has been in the South of Market neighborhood for 54 years and its present location for 33 years, have announced that the bar will not be able to return once bars are allowed to reopen after the COVID-19 Shelter in Place requirements are modified. The collective will continue to perform together “in exile” until they are able to secure a new venue. With San Francisco and now California’s orders to shut bars and clubs, many people who work in San Francisco’s LGBTQ nightlife scene – bartenders, barbacks, security, drag performers, go-go dancers, and more – are suddenly finding themselves without an income. In addition, the “shelter in place” policies are also cancelling the private parties that many bartenders and performers used to supplement their income.
